The Handle Suddenly Feels Wrong
A uPVC window handle normally has a definite range of movement. Turn it into the locked position and the mechanism reaches a positive stop.
Then one day the handle travels further than normal.
It might feel loose, vague or almost spin beyond its usual position. The window can still appear locked, but something inside the mechanism has changed.
The Handle Is Only the Lever
The visible handle is only the first part of the locking system.
A square metal spindle passes through the handle and into the gearbox fitted inside the edge of the sash. The spindle turns the gearbox follower, which transfers that rotation through the internal drive components and into the espagnolette strip.
That movement operates the locking rollers or mushroom cams around the window.
A handle travelling too far can point towards wear or breakage inside this drive system rather than a faulty handle itself.
The Gearbox Has Lost Control
Internal gearbox components deal with force every time the window gets locked.
Worn gears, a damaged follower or a broken internal stop can create excess movement at the handle. Continued deterioration can eventually leave the handle rotating while the espag barely moves at all.
Forcing a badly aligned window accelerates the damage. Locking cams striking their keeps create resistance at the espag, while extra pressure applied through the handle gets transferred straight back into the gearbox.
The vague handle can be the warning before complete failure.
Check the Mechanism Before Buying a Handle
Open the window and watch the locking points while operating the handle slowly.
The rollers or mushrooms should travel positively as the handle turns. Excess handle movement combined with delayed, incomplete or no movement along the espag points towards a problem deeper inside the mechanism.
Check the square spindle and handle fixing first. A damaged or rounded spindle can create similar symptoms.
A failed gearbox needs identifying correctly before replacement. Backset, spindle position, faceplate dimensions, fixing centres and manufacturer design all matter. Similar-looking gearboxes are not automatically interchangeable.
Remove the faulty mechanism carefully and take the old unit with you rather than ordering a replacement from appearance alone.
