Effortless solutions for windows and doors

The Rattle Above Your Head

Strong wind hits the house and something around the window starts tapping.

The noise gets faster with every gust. It can sound like loose glass, a damaged hinge or something physically knocking against the outside of the frame.

Look towards the top of the window instead.

A loose trickle vent can make a ridiculous amount of noise for such a small piece of hardware.

Two Parts Sitting in the Airflow

A typical window trickle vent uses an internal controllable ventilator connected to a slot through the frame or sash.

An external canopy protects that opening from direct weather. Inside, a sliding shutter or flap controls the airflow entering the room.

Strong wind creates changing air pressure across those components.

A loose internal flap can vibrate against its housing. Worn clips, loose screws or a damaged external canopy can produce a harder tapping noise as gusts repeatedly load and release the plastic.

Bournemouth Wind Finds the Loose Bits

Coastal properties around Bournemouth get plenty of exposed wind.

A vent can remain silent during calm weather and start rattling the moment pressure builds against that side of the house.

Years of opening, closing, UV exposure and temperature changes also take their toll on plastic components. Screw holes loosen. Clips wear. Canopies crack.

Stuffing tissue into the vent might stop the noise. It also defeats the ventilation system.

Find the Movement

Operate the internal vent first and check for excessive play in the slider or flap.

Inspect the fixing screws and vent body for cracks or damaged clips. Check the external canopy safely from outside and look for loose edges, broken plastic or movement against the frame.

Tighten serviceable fixings carefully. Small plastic vent bodies do not need brutal screwdriver torque.

A cracked canopy, worn shutter or damaged vent needs replacing with a suitable unit that matches the existing slot dimensions and required ventilation capacity.

Do not permanently seal the opening simply to stop the rattle.
