Effortless solutions for windows and doors

The Summer Window Rip

Leaving a bedroom window closed during a hot summer week creates an expensive trap.

Homeowners yank hard on a stuck frame to get some air. The result is a sharp ripping sound and instant mechanical damage. The heavy black rubber seal pulls clean out of its grooved track. It hangs loose down the side of the opening, completely destroying any chance of a flush, airtight closure.

Chemical Degradation of Cheap Rubber

Salt air, road grime, and raw UV light kill cheap rubber compounds. Years of exposure attack the core durability of the seal. The crisp rubber profile eventually turns into a sticky, tar-like substance. High summer temperatures cook this degraded material, fusing the rubber directly to the opposite white plastic frame under constant closing pressure.

The Destruction of the Gasket

Forcing a fused window open physically separates the rubber from its backing track.

This severe mechanical stress stretches the gasket out of shape or tears the material in half. Re-inserting a stretched rubber seal into the uPVC groove is completely impossible. Worn, sticky seals leave permanent gaps around the perimeter, allowing winter draughts and rainwater to bypass the frame entirely.

The Trade Prevention Method

Stop the sticking with a quick annual maintenance routine. Scrub the black lines down with a dry rag to shift loose grit. Coat a clean cloth with a specialist dry silicone spray and wipe it straight onto the rubber surface.

True silicone lubes keep the rubber soft, stopping the melt cycle dead. Keep standard WD-40 or heavy grease far away from window channels. Petroleum additives rot rubber components, turning the seal into a liquid mush within months.
