The Bang From the Patio
The lawn gets cut. Everything looks normal.
A few minutes later there is an enormous bang from the back of the house. The patio-door glass has shattered into thousands of small pieces.
The culprit can be sitting somewhere in the grass.
A lawnmower or strimmer only needs to catch one loose stone and fire it towards the glass.
Toughened Glass Stores Stress
Patio doors, bifolds and other low-level glazed doors commonly use toughened safety glass.
The manufacturing process heats the glass and rapidly cools its surfaces. That leaves the outer layers in compression while tensile stress remains locked deeper inside the pane.
This gives toughened glass far greater resistance to normal loads than ordinary annealed glass.
It also explains the spectacular failure.
One Tiny Stone Can Trigger the Whole Pane
A mower blade or strimmer can launch gravel and small stones at serious speed.
A concentrated strike can damage the stressed surface of toughened glass, particularly around vulnerable edges. Once a critical fracture penetrates the compressive layer, the stored stresses release across the pane.
The crack does not simply stop around the impact point.
The entire sheet breaks into the familiar mass of small, relatively blunt fragments associated with toughened safety glass. That sudden release creates the loud bang homeowners often hear.
Find the Cause Before Replacing the Glass
Keep lawnmowers and strimmers away from loose gravel around glazed doors. Clear stones from lawn edges beside bifolds, sliders and French doors before cutting.
Inspect a shattered pane carefully from a safe distance. A localised impact point or damaged edge can help identify mechanical breakage, although the origin is not always obvious after complete fragmentation.
Do not assume every unexplained shattered unit came from flying debris. Edge damage, installation problems and other glass failures need separate investigation.
A destroyed toughened sealed unit cannot be repaired. Measure the unit correctly and replace it with safety glass carrying the appropriate specification for its location.
