The Noise You Cannot Get To
The window is shut tight.
Nothing moves around the handle. The hinges are solid and pushing against the glass makes no difference.
There is still a faint metallic rattle every time the wind picks up.
Look closely and the problem might actually be sealed inside the double glazing.
Decorative Georgian bars fitted between the panes can come loose.
Those Bars Are Inside the Sealed Unit
Plenty of Georgian-style windows don’t use individual pieces of glass.
The pattern is created using lightweight bars fitted inside the cavity of the double-glazed unit. They give the traditional Georgian appearance without splitting the window into separate panes.
Small connectors and locating pieces hold the grid in position.
Nothing inside that cavity should be floating around.
A loose joint or failed fixing can leave part of the grid with enough movement to tap against another bar or the inside face of the glass.
Bournemouth Wind Makes It Obvious
A tiny amount of movement can stay unnoticed for months.
Then strong wind starts loading the glass.
The panes flex slightly under changing pressure while the loose Georgian grid sits inside the cavity. Suddenly there is a rattle that only appears during gusty weather.
Opening and closing the window can produce the same clue.
A sharp knock followed by a metallic buzz from inside the glass points you away from the hinges and towards the sealed unit.
No amount of lubricant around the frame is going to reach it.
You Cannot Open the Glass and Fix It
A double-glazed unit is manufactured as a sealed assembly.
Cutting the edge seal apart to repair a loose Georgian bar destroys the unit. Moisture can then enter the cavity and the glass will eventually mist.
Check the obvious external causes first. Make sure the glazing beads are secure and confirm the complete sealed unit isn’t moving inside the sash.
A noise definitely coming from the Georgian grid leaves one proper solution.
Measure the glass accurately and replace the sealed unit with a new one manufactured with the correct internal bar layout.
Keep the old unit intact until the replacement specification has been confirmed. Bar positions, colour, thickness and pattern all need to match.
