The Hidden Espag Mechanism
Multi-point locking tracks run down the entire vertical edge of the window sash.
These metal mechanisms, called espags, rely on sliding roller cams to secure the window into the frame keeps. Airborne dust, coastal salt air, and dried-out factory grease completely jam these sliding components over time. The handle merely acts as the leverage point for a seized metal rail.

Stripped gear teeth leave the window permanently jammed shut, requiring a trade glazier to physically de-glaze the unit and bypass the lock manually.
The Maintenance Solution
Fix a stiff uPVC window handle using direct lubrication before the metal snaps.
Apply a high-quality light machine oil or clear silicone spray directly into the moving roller slots along the window edge. Clear away any visible grit using a stiff brush. Cycle the mechanism back and forth to distribute the oil deeply into the internal tracks. Perform this maintenance routine twice a year to keep the operation completely smooth.
