Effortless solutions for windows and doors

The Foam Tape Disaster

Cold air blowing through a closed window triggers a rushed trip to the local DIY shop.

Homeowners immediately buy cheap sticky foam tape and jam it along the inner frame to stop the breeze. This is a massive mistake. Adding thick foam tape forces the metal locking points out of alignment. Operating the handle against this extra resistance snaps the internal gearbox mechanism entirely, turning a basic draught into a completely broken lock.

The Real Cause: Warped Friction Stays

Black rubber bubble seals rarely fail on modern uPVC windows.

The true culprit is a bent friction stay hinge hidden inside the frame mechanism. Heavy coastal gale forces catch open window sashes, twisting the thin metal tracks instantly. A fraction of a millimetre of warp ruins the window function. The bent metal track prevents the opening sash from pulling flat against the main frame.

The Gap You Cannot See

Close the window fully and inspect the hinged side from the outside.

A bent hinge leaves a visible vertical gap between the black rubber seal and the plastic profile. Air flows freely through this opening. No amount of handle-forcing closes this space because the mechanical pivot point is physically compromised. The rubber seal cannot do its job because the metal arm is no longer straight.

The 10-Minute Trade Fix

Swap out the ruined metal hardware.

Open the window fully. Back the old screws out of the twisted stay and pull the metal arm clear of the track. Drop a fresh pair of matching friction tracks straight onto the frame.

New steel hinges clamp the opening sash dead flat against the existing rubber frame. This kills the draught instantly without messing with your locking system. Change both hinges together. Fitting just one leaves uneven pressure, warping the sash and ruining the new alignment within weeks.

Get the Right Stack Height

Do not guess the hinge measurements.

Friction stays come in specific 13mm or 17mm stack heights, and choosing the wrong size prevents the window from closing at all. Pop down to 78 Alma Road with your old hinge. Our trade counter team can identify the exact replacement pair needed to kill the draught permanently. Give us a call on 01202 533126 for straight trade advice.
