Old uPVC windows have a massive security hole.
Forget the locks. A burglar doesn’t even need a key or a hammer to get inside.
The Outside Bead
Check your window frames from the driveway.
If those plastic strips holding the glass are on the outside, your house is a target. These are called external beads.
A burglar just pops those four strips off with a putty knife or a screwdriver. It takes seconds.
The Glass Problem
The glass is loose once the strips are gone.
The burglar just lifts the whole double-glazed unit out and puts it on the grass. They climb in through the empty frame.
No noise. No broken glass. No alarm. It’s done in ten seconds.
The Internal Fix
Modern windows are internally beaded.
The plastic strips are on the inside of the house. You can’t reach them from the garden. You can’t pry them off.
The glass is locked into the frame from the secure side of the wall.
Moving On
A burglar stuck on the patio has no chance.
They can’t pop the beads. They won’t smash the glass because of the noise. They move on to an easier house with old frames.
Check Your Frames
Look at your windows today. If the beads are on the outside, the security is useless.
