The Misdiagnosed Door Drag

Bifold doors eventually drag and feel massively heavy to operate.

Homeowners immediately assume the heavy glass panes dropped out of square. They call out expensive glazing engineers to pull the glass out and re-pack the units. This is a complete waste of cash. The real problem sits inside the aluminium channel running right under your feet.

The 100kg Roller Grinder

A sunken bottom track collects everyday household debris like a mechanical magnet.

Dog hair, garden dirt, and small gravel stones pack deep into the running channel. Rolling a massive 100kg aluminium door section over this debris turns the track into a grinder. Bournemouth properties face an even higher risk because fine coastal sand blows straight into the tracks from the garden.

How Grit Destroys the Mechanism

Heavy doors rely on small nylon carriage wheels to glide across the metal track.

Hard grit gouges flat spots straight into the curved face of these soft nylon rollers. The original smooth glide disappears completely. It gets replaced by a nasty crunching sound and a door requiring brute physical force to push. Damaged nylon rollers cannot be repaired. They require a full mechanical teardown of the door system to replace.

The Trade Cleaning Protocol

Proper bifold door track maintenance requires a rigid cleaning routine.

Run a stiff paintbrush along the internal grooves to loosen packed dirt and sand. Vacuum the loose debris out immediately using a narrow crevice tool. Finish the job with a heavy application of dry silicone lubricant spray. Never use thick grease or standard WD-40. Wet oils trap fresh sand and accelerate the destruction of the wheels.
